The Euro fell further against the dollar Monday, the Associated Press reported. The 15-nation euro bought US$1.5617 in European morning trading, down from its level of US$1.5699 in New York late Thursday. Markets in the U.S. were closed Friday for the Independence Day holiday. The European Central Bank raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 4.25 percent on Thursday to combat rising inflation in the euro zone. The British pound also fell somewhat, buying US$1.9726 Monday, compared with the US$1.9829 it bought Thursday. The dollar strengthened to 107.58 Japanese yen, from 106.77 yen on Thursday.
