Gunmen fatally shot a driver for the U.N. food agency in southern Somalia, the agency said Friday, according to AP. The World Food Program said Hassan Abdi's death near the village of Lego marks the third killing of a WFP-contracted driver in the country this year. Abdi was gunned down while traveling in a convoy of trucks carrying 328 metric tons (362 tons) of relief food Thursday morning to Bay and Bakool regions, the agency said in a statement issued in neighboring Kenya. Denise Brown, WFP's deputy country director, condemned the attacks «on personnel and trucks delivering lifesaving food» to the hungry Somalis. «We urge all parties to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian staff and cargo across the country, especially at a time when we are trying to feed more people and need to double food deliveries,» Brown said.
