The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 13.23, or 0.93 percent, to 1,413.40, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 23.83, or 0.95 percent, to 2,492.26.
The New York Stock Exchange composite fell 66.77 to close at 9,536.01, while the American Stock Exchange composite rose 30.51 to 2,405.43.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.80, or 0.38 percent, to 735.65.
The price of a barrel of light, sweet crude oil for June delivery rose $2.02 to close at $129.07.
