Several environmental organizations have called on the European Union (EU) to stop biofuel targets, in reaction to ongoing negotiations among the 27 member states on guidelines for the production of fuels from biomass, according to DPA. Contrary to EU goals, biofuel production could release more greenhouse gases and negatively affect nature and humans, environmental activists such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. The EU aims to raise the share of biofuel among total consumption of transportation fuel to ten per cent by 2020. Participants in the negotiations say the EU is still to discuss the size of the savings in carbon emissions by using biofuel, mentioning between 35 to 50 per cent.
