A Chikungunya outbreak in Sukoharjo district, Central Java, infected a total of 314 people up to March 2008, a local health official said, according to Antara. The number of Chikungunya cases happening in Sukoharjo district in 2008 had reached 309 which was higher than in 2007, the head of the disease prevention and treatment section of the Sukoharjo haalth office, Agus Prihatmo, said on Wednesday. The Chikungunya cases occurred in eight sub districts, excluding Nguter and Polokarto, with the highest number of cases (21) recorded in Kartasura sub district, Prihatmo said. Prihatmo said health authorities would soon conduct fogging operations and distribute abate powder among the people to destroy aedes aegypti mosquito nests in the villages. An infected person usually has difficulty moving his or her body normally and it takes three to seven days for a sufferer to be cured with medication.
