United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Tuesday condemned “in the strongest terms” Tuesday's bomb attack in the Karbala region of Iraq, according to a statement released by Ban's spokesperson. The bomb attacks, which took place next to the Imam Hussein shrine, killed “several dozen people” and injured many others, the statement said. “The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in this heinous attack,” read the statement. Ban is appealing to Iraqis to exercise “maximum restraint” as they encounter what he deemed as “provocative actions,” the statement said. “He also urges all Iraqi leaders to resolve their differences through political dialogue and in a spirit of national reconciliation,” the statement added. Media reports suggest that at least 50 people have been killed and that an unknown suicide bomber was responsible for the attack.
