Kai Eide, a Norwegian diplomat, was appointed Friday to head the UN mission in Afghanistan. According to DPA, Eide replaces Tom Koenigs of Germany, who stepped down in December after almost two years on the job. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon informed the UN Security Council by letter of the appointment, which took effect immediately. The UN mission in Afghanistan has been assisting the government in Kabul to implement democratic reforms and reconstruction of the war-torn country.
