The number of road deaths in Germany dropped to 4,970 last year, the lowest since records were first kept in 1953, DPA quoted the Federal Statistics Office as saying Monday. Road fatalities were down 2.4 per cent from 2006, although the number of injured rose during the same period by 2.2 per cent to 431,500, the statistics office said. The number of accidents also increased to 2.3 million, up 2.7 per cent from 2006. Germany's major motoring organization, the ADAC, said improved car safety features was one of the main reasons for the decreasing toll in road deaths. Better roads, safer motorways as well as improved driving instruction were other contributing factors, the organization said. There are around 42 million cars on Germany's roads.
