German police arrested a man, 21, and woman, 19, on Friday for murder after their baby starved to death in their apartment, according to dpa. The man had called an ambulance Wednesday evening in Frankfurt an der Oder near the Polish border to say the baby, about 6 months old, was dead. An autopsy showed the child had not been fed. At least five previous child deaths by neglect in a land of plenty have appalled Germans in the past two years. The other cases included Lea-Sophie, 5, and Jacqueline, 14 months, last year; Leon, abandoned at 9 months, and Mehmet, who weighed 10 kilos when he died at age 4 in 2006; and Jessica, 7, in 2005. In another series of cases, children have been beaten to death, suffocated or drowned by disturbed parents.
