A German aid worker was abducted by gunmen in Somalia's north Tuesday, officials said, in another attack on foreigners in the region known for being more peaceful and stable than the volatile south, according to dpa. "The abduction happened after the kidnappers exchanged fire with the bodyguards escorting the delegation which was assessing the climatic conditions of the area. The driver was wounded and the man was kidnapped," said Khaliif Dahir, a local elder who was informed of the abduction. The incident occurred in Erigabo on the border between Somalia's semi-autonomous regions of Puntland and Somaliland. Dahir said the man worked for the German relief agency German Agro Action (GAA), which confirmed the attack. The abducted man headed a food sustenance programme in Somalia and was en route to a meeting with local fishermen when the attack occurred, the agency said. Abdi Hassan Saed, a local security official, said the incident was under investigation.
