About 100 tons of crude spilled into the Rubas River, which runs into the Caspian Sea, from the Baku-Novorossiisk pipeline in the Derbent district of Dagestan, the republican office of the Federal Technological, Environmental and Atomic Supervisory Service told Itar-Tass on Sunday. Chernomortransneft, the Dagestani Emergency Situations Ministry and other services have installed absorption booms three kilometers away from the sea. They are pumping out crude from the river water. The pipeline ruptured last night. Nothing is known about reasons for the accident so far. It could have been a seam break or unauthorized taking of crude. The leakage has stopped, the office said.
