Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Saturday called for the economic isolation of northern Cyprus to end and said he believed that Greek Cypriot membership of the European Union was the main reason for the failure to lift economic embargoes, Turkish Cypriot Bayrak Radio and Television reported, according to dpa. Speaking at a press conference with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Schroeder said he supported United Nations-led efforts to reunite the eastern Mediterranean island. Schroeder arrived in northern Cyprus on Friday for talks with Turkish Cypriot leaders in a visit that has been met with dismay by Greek Cypriot politicians.
