About 3,500 people were trapped Saturday after a canal breach poured 3 feet (0.9 meters) of freezing water into about 800 homes, authorities said, according to AP. A 30-foot (9-meter) wide section of the Truckee Canal broke shortly before 5 a.m., sending a wave of water rushing into the desert town on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains near Reno, officials said.
