Taiwan rejected on Friday a request by a Chinese dissident to seek political asylum on the island, saying there is nothing it can do to help what it perceives as a judicial issue, according to dpa. "From what we have been told, Wu Yalin has sought help over the injustice he has faced in China. As unfair judicial rulings exist in various countries, he should deal with his problem via the legal system at his home country," said Jonathan Liu, spokesman of the Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan's top China policy-planning body. According to Liu, Wu claimed he had been imprisoned for nine years and was recently wanted by China for alleged sedition for encouraging Chinese people to read a publication by the banned Falun Gong spiritual group critical of the Chinese government. Liu said Wu entered Taiwan Thursday night as part of a Chinese tour group, but Friday sought assistance from a civilian judicial reform agency in Taipei to seek political asylum in Taiwan. Liu said since Wu came to Taiwan as a tourist, he should leave Taiwan after finishing his sightseeing trip on the island. Wu was not immediately available for comment.
