Rescuers pulled dozens of corpses from villages devastated by landslides and floods in western Indonesia, many digging through mud with their bare hands Thursday as they were lashed by rain. At least 87 people were killed or feared dead, officials said. Blocked roads hampered efforts to get heavy equipment to affected areas on Java island, the Associated Press reported. Rivers bloated by days of rain burst their banks in the towns of Solo and Sragen, forcing more than 28,000 people to leave their homes, said Rustam Pakaya, a disaster official in the ministry of health. Witnesses said water levels were a meter (yard) high in places.
