Two German legislators said Friday they had been refused entry visas by Myanmar, an online news service, the Netzeitung, reported according to DPA. Juergen Klimke, a federal deputy for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and specialist on development aid issues, said he and opposition legislator Hellmut Koenigshaus were told the trip was off. They had planned the visit in the first week of January. He said the Planning and Interior Ministry had stated Friday that they "could travel around at will, but could not be escorted," so a special visa was not available. "It wasn't expressed as a refusal, but it's diplomatic language for a refusal," said Klimke. The two men said they had wanted to review development opportunities after the government crackdown on dissent this year. Koenigshaus belongs to the Free Democrat Party.
