Troops overran two Tamil Tiger rebel bunkers in northern Sri Lanka and beat back insurgents who attempted to breach a defense line on Tuesday, killing five rebels, the military said. Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said the soldiers pushed into guerrilla-held territory from the Muhamalai defense line in Jaffna peninsula and attacked the bunkers, leaving three rebels dead. Hours before, soldiers killed two rebels as they attempted to breach a defense line in Mannar district northwest of Muhamalai, Nanayakkara was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not be contacted immediately for comment.
