An Italian football fan was killed Sunday during a clash with rival supporters at a motorway rest stop, according to dpa. The Lazio supporter was on the way to a match between Lazio and Serie A leaders Inter Milan in Milan when he was shot dead in a clash between fans of Lazio and the Turin club Juventus. Police said Gabriele Sandri, 26, was killed when an officer accidentally fired his pistol during what appeared to be a minor clash between fans. Lega Calcio, the league of professional clubs, postponed the Inter-Lazio match. All other Serie A matches later Sunday were to kick-off 10 minutes later as a sign of mourning. Lazio president Claucio Lotito said he had called for the match to be suspended "to respect the death of a person who was part of the family of Lazio fans." Italian news agency ANSA earlier reported that a police officer had fired a warning shot to break up the clashes beside the A1 motorway near Arezzo in Tuscany. Sandri, a disc jockey from Rome, reportedly was sitting in a car when the bullet hit him in the neck. Reports said the death also prompted clashes between ultra fans and police in Bergamo, where AC Milan were due to play Atalanta. Prime Minister Romano Prodi said he was informed about the death by Italy's interior minister. "These are episodes which are very worrisome," he said. Last season, a policeman was killed in riots following a game between Palermo and Catania in Sicily.
