A sharp rise in Singapore road accidents involving children has triggered new initiatives to beef up safety, dpa quoted police sources as saying on Saturday. During the first six months of 2007, 110 pedestrians under 17 were injured in traffic accidents, 41 per cent more than the 78 injured in the corresponding period of last year. There was one fatality in each six-month period. Children are not paying attention when crossing the road, traffic police said. New traffic safety videos are being sent to schools reminding students about good safety practices, such as making sure vehicles have come to a stop before they cross the road. Police are also urging parents to set a good example.
