At least seven workers were killed and 25 others wounded when an under-construction bridge collapsed Thursday evening in Dubai, news reports said, according to DPA. The bridge along Sufooh Road collapsed when a crane operator placed too many steel bars on the bridge's top layer, Emirates News Agency reported citing the director general of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Matar Saeed al-Tayer. The amount of steel placed was more than the allowed amount, al- Tayer added. Dubai police chief Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tameim also blamed the accident on the crane driver and poor site supervision. After inspecting the site, he said the bridge likely collapsed because a crane driver had tried to lift a 1,5-ton load of steel onto the bridge. "The load hit against the bridge columns causing it to collapse," he told Emirates News Agency.
