The region's largest oil spill in a decade was fouling the San Francisco Bay Thursday after a huge container ship slammed into Bay Bridge, according to DPA. No damage was caused to the bridge in the incident as the ship struck a protective structure around the bridge's massive pilings. But the 65,131-ton Cosco Busan, a 250-metre-long container ship, did suffer a 25 metre gash and spilled some 220,000 litres of fuel into the water. The accident happened in thick fog Wednesday and by Thursday only 30,000 liters had been contained, US Coast Guard Petty Officer Russ Tippets said. Many beaches in the San Francisco area have been closed and local animal shelters were bracing for an influx of wildlife contaminated by the oil slick.
