Rescuers on Friday discovered the body of one of the nine miners who went missing following last Friday's coal mine flooding in Chengcheng County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Xinhua reported. The search for the other missing miners is continuing, said sources from the headquarters in charge of the rescue operation. A total of 14 miners were working underground when Yaotou Coal Mine in Chengcheng County, Weinan City, was flooded at 11:40 a.m. on October 26. Five of them narrowly escaped. The trapped miners included eight Shaanxi locals and one from Gansu, a neighboring province. Yaotou Coal Mine is a registered private mine with an annual output of 60,000 tons. The provincial government of Shaanxi, one of the country's main coal producers, started a province-wide safety inspection of all coal mines shortly after the flood. A press release from the provincial government said those that had failed to implement safety measures would be shut down for rectification. A total of 59 coal mine accidents took place in Shaanxi in the past 10 months, causing at least 72 deaths.
