Two of Liberia rivers have overflowed, flooding rice farms, washing away bridges and cutting off roads leading into neighboring Guinea and Ivory Coast, AP reported. The flooding is worsening conditions in Liberia, where at least 17,000 people have already been affected by the torrential rains that have submerged a swath of Africa over the past two months. Elsewhere on the continent, the rains have affected 1.5 million people and caused 650,000 people to lose their homes, said Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA. Flood water has ruined numerous rice farms, washed away bridges and cut off a key highway linking the commercial town of Ganta on Liberia's border with Guinea and the regional capital of Sanniquellie.
