A strong earthquake rattled western Indonesia Tuesday morning, striking off the coast of Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, prompting authorities to temporarily issue a tsunami alert. The epicenter for the 6.2-magnitude quake was about 90 miles (145 km) west-southwest Bengkulu and struck around 10:44 a.m. (11:44 p.m. ET Monday. A series of powerful earthquakes in the same region last month killed 23 people and damaged or destroyed thousands of buildings. There were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or damage from Tuesday's temblor.
