An eight-day heat wave responsible for scattered power outages for 600,000 people in Southern California has been blamed for at least 16 deaths, UPI reported. The victims ranged from a 26-year-old man to several elderly people found dead in houses without air conditioning, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. In one case, paramedics in Pasadena found a victim in her 80s dead in an apartment where the temperature was 115 degrees, officials said. Tuesday, scores of utility company crews worked around the clock to replace blown transformers throughout the region, where some people had been without power for three days, the Times said.
