Former Pakistani diplomat Ashraf Jehangir Qazi has been appointed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's new special representative to the strife-torn Sudan, said a statement. Qazi, currently the special representative to Iraq, another war-devastated country, will be based in Khartoum. The statement said Qazi has wide and extensive diplomatic experience. Prior to joining the U.N. in 2004, Qazi served as Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, the former Soviet Union, China and India. He also held a number of other important diplomatic assignments.
