A Lower Manhattan building under demolition due to damage from the September 11 attacks nearly six years ago was ablaze, New York City media reported, according to dpa. Television news broadcaster NY1 reported that at least one person was injured in the blaze at the former Deutsche Bank building, which adjoins the so-called Ground Zero site where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed by suicide strikes. Footage from the scene showed smoke billowing from the top of the structure, which is covered by scaffolding and was being dismantled. NY1 reported that it was a four-alarm fire that began on the 20th storey and had spread to several floors. The 14 top floors of the once 40-storey office building have been removed previously as demolition work was continuing. Nearly 2,700 people were killed in the collapse of the Twin Towers, which were struck by airliners hijacked by members of al- Qaeda, the terrorist network led by Osama bin Laden. Several surrounding buildings were damaged beyond repair by the falling rubble of the towers and either collapsed or have been demolished in the years since the attacks.
