About 1.9 million Jordanians go to the polls on Tuesday in municipal elections that could provide signals on the direction of the public opinion in the run-up for the parliamentary elections, which are expected in November, according to dpa. According to official figures, 2,706 candidates, including 361 women, have registered to run for the positions of mayor and council members in 94 municipalities. The Islamic Action Front (IAF), Jordan's largest political party, said Islamists were taking part in the elections with only 33 candidates. The IAF Secretary General Zaki Bani Ershaid said that he had sent a letter to Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit complaining of certain "irregularities" in the election campaign.
