Curfew was imposed on a town in north-eastern Nepal Saturday after Maoists stormed a district administration office and clashed violently with police, DPA reported. The local administration imposed an overnight curfew on the town of Charikot, about 100 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu, after Maoist protests turned violent. Police said the Maoist cadres and members of the Maoist youth wing Young Communist League (YCL) stormed the district administration office and assault chief district officer. The Maoists were demanding the withdrawal of a criminal charge against its local leader who is accused of assaulting a local political leader. Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and fired live ammunition into the air to disperse the unruly mob. The Maoists vandalised the administration office as well as the offices of pro-royalist Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and forced people to close their shops in the main market. Police said at least 16 people, including four officers were injured in the clash.
