Deputy UN High Commissioner for Refugees L Craig Johnstone appealed Thursday for an increase in support for Syria and Jordan, which together host more than 2 million Iraq refugees, according to dpa. "These host countries deserve as much help as we can provide in dealing with the enormous burden they have carried for the past few years," Johnstone said, warning that the displacement situation in the region remains "extremely serious." A statement issued by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Johnstone had "positive meetings" with senior government officials. In Syria, Johnstone spoke to around 400 refugees at the UNHCR registration centre. He expressed his fear that a whole generation could miss out on their education if Iraqi families do not make the most of the opportunity presented by the Syrian government to enroll their children in public schools.
