Egyptian authorities announced that they had questioned 35 members of a new jihadist group suspected to have links with al-Qaeda terrorist network, Egyptian newspapers reported Saturday, according to dpa. According to al-Masri al-Yom, a leading independent daily, the individuals were rounded-up from the upper-Egyptian provinces of Beni-Suef and Qalioubiya, south of Cairo. The group was detained last April, but according to the newspaper, the news of their arrest was highly classified. The suspected militants were charged with plotting a series of terrorist attacks inside Egypt. According to the report, the elements communicated with other al- Qaeda loyalists via the internet, specifically through an Islamist website called Sawt al-Khilafa, or the Voice of the Caliphate.
