A chlorine gas leak at a newly inaugurated chemical plant sickened 107 workers, state media reported Saturday. The leak at the Xinyu Chemical Co. plant on Friday was blamed on equipment failure, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The facility had been inaugurated only one day earlier. It is located in the industrial city of Panzhihua, which is home to one of China's largest steel makers and many mines and small factories. Eight of the workers needed treatment for poisoning and the rest were under observation, Xinhua reported, citing the Szechuan provincial administration for workplace safety supervision. The leak was capped overnight, Xinhua said. There were no evacuations.
