In a surprise decision Wednesday, a Chilean judge rejected the extradition of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who is wanted at home on charges of corruption and crimes against humanity stemming from his decade-long rule, according to dpa. Supreme Court Judge Orlando Alvarez said the majority of crimes Fujimori is charged with either did not exist in Chilean law or had not been directly linked to his government. The case must still be decided by the full Chilean Supreme Court in coming weeks and Fujimori will remain under house arrest in Chile until then. Fujimori ruled in Peru from 1990 to 2000, when he fled to Japan to escape a corruption scandal that included bribes to legislators. He was arrested by Chilean authorities in November 2005, after flying to Chile as a possible stepping-stone for a new presidential run in Peru.
