Torrential monsoon rains left 45 people dead in India's western Maharashtra state over the weekend even as the situation in state capital Mumbai improved with flood waters receding from low-lying areas, news reports said Sunday, according to DPA. Those killed included 14 members of two families who drowned as they tried to wade through a river in Amravati district on Sunday, PTI news agency reported. Most of the deaths reported were due to drowning, mudslides, house collapses and electrocution. Maharashtra Governor SM Krishna told reporters that 45 people were killed by rain-related incidents over the weekend. More than 5,000 people had been evacuated to safer areas in Amravati district alone. The rains also claimed four lives in adjoining Gujarat state Sunday. In central Chhattisgarh state eight people were killed in rain-related incidents over the weekend.
