A Chinese man who claims to have been persecuted in China swam to an offshore island of Taiwan to seek political asylum from the Taiwan government. According to the Central Mews Agency (CNA), Hu Xianping, 50, from Nanjing, swam from China's coastal city of Xiamen to Tatan, a Taiwan-held islet off China's southern coast, dpa reported. Hu claimed that he has been under surveillance by Chinese police for 20 years for his anti-Communist views. But he has an uncle in Taiwan who is a general, so he came to Taiwan to seek asylum. Taiwan coastguard sent Hu from Tatan to Kinmen, a larger island off China's coast held by Taiwan, for interrogation.
