Four Spanish UN soldiers were killed and four wounded Sunday when an armoured personnel carrier of the UN interim force was blown up in the Marjeyoun-Khiyam area in southern Lebanon. The deaths were confirmed by a senior Lebanese security official, who said the blast was caused by a roadside bomb planted beneath a car, dpa reported. It happened near the mainly Christian town of Khiyam, south of Marjeyoun on the eastern part of the border with Israel. The attack was the first ever against UNIFIL forces in that particular region. No organization claimed responsibility, but forces affiliated with al-Qaeda, like Fatah al-Islam, who have been battling the Lebanese army since May 20 in northern Lebanon, have threatened to hit UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon.
