Rescuers were searching on Saturday for nine people missing after four vehicles plummeted into the sea from a collapsed bridge section in southern China, state media said, according to dpa. The semi-official China News Service gave the registration numbers of a light goods vehicle, a saloon car, a heavy truck and a post office van that were believed to have fallen into the sea from the 1,600-metre Jiujiang Bridge in Guangdong province on Friday. Eight ships sent out to search for the missing people had used sonar technology to detect three underwater objects that could be vehicles, the official Xinhua news agency said. The ships were continuing to search the sea at a depth of 30 metres to 60 metres, the agency quoted the Guangdong Maritime Bureau as saying. A sand barge hit a pillar of the bridge early Friday morning near Guangdong's Foshan city, bringing down a section measuring more than 150 metres. The barge became partially submerged but the 10 crew were all rescued on Friday, the reports said. -- SPA
