At least two units in the Salvadoran military contingent in Iraq came under artillery fire by insurgent groups, El Salvador's National Defence Ministry said Tuesday, according to DPA. The attacks, which took place over the weekend, did not cause casualties. El Salvador has some 380 soldiers deployed in Iraq and is the only Latin American nation that has been in the Middle Eastern country since the US-led invasion of 2003. Since then, five Salvadoran soldiers have been killed in Iraq and more than 20 have been injured.
