The European Union wants to make it easier to import certain kinds of fish like cod and hake to keep the food processing industry competitive, officials said Monday. Many popular fish, like cod, are increasingly rare in EU waters, leaving the processing industry at a competitive disadvantage and with tariff quota measures, the EU Commission wants more imports of the fish concerned by reducing import duties, The Associated Press reported. «We need to ensure that our processing industry has access to the necessary fisheries products for their activities,» said EU Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg. «In recent years, there has been a shortage of some raw material due to depletion of a number of stocks.» The target species are whitefish, but will also include shrimp and herring.
