Health authorities in Taipei Monday asked Taiwanese visitors to get vaccinated against mumps before visiting Canada, where an outbreak of the highly infectious disease has been reported. "Citizens who plan to visit Canada must be careful and they are advised to get vaccinated against mumps before their departure, as an outbreak with 300 cases has been reported there since May," dpa quoted deputy chief of the Taipei City Disease Control Department Lin Pi-fen as saying. He said mumps, an acute viral disease, is spread through saliva droplets. Those who come into contact with object contaminated with such droplets would be infected. Symptoms include fever and painful swelling of the salivary glands, and it is best for visitors to get vaccinated two weeks in advance, he noted.
