Zatlers elected as Latvia's next president

Latvian lawmakers on Thursday elected Valdis Zatlers, a medical doctor, as the Baltic state's next president.
Zatlers, whose candidacy had been proposed by the ruling center-right coalition, received 58 votes in the 100-member parliament, while opponent Aivars Endzins received 39 votes, the Associated Press reported.
