Weatherman were predicting more snow overnight Monday, after heavy falls left mountain roads and passes closed in southern Switzerland, according to dpa. The Grand Saint-Bernard tunnel was cut off and the road to the Loetschberg rail tunnel blocked after heavy snow fell down to 1,200 metres during the night Sunday. A number of mountain passes including Gothard and Simplon were also impassable. It was feared the closures could cause problems for holiday makers returning from Italy to Switzerland and Germany after the bank holiday weekend. The heavy snow falls brought down trees and caused a power cut disrupting the Jungfrau and Bernese Oberland railways linking Interlaken with the Jungfrau plateau. The road to Grindelwald railway station was also blocked by a number of trees.
