European Union foreign affairs chief Javier Solana on Tuesday met Lebanese officials to discuss the prevailing political situation in the country amid violence raging in northern Lebanon, DPA reported. Solana told reporters that the EU wanted to help Lebanon resolve the political crisis and tackle its economic problems once the bloodshed was halted in the north, where the army has been battling Islamic militants since Sunday. Solana also held talks with Prime Minister Fuad Seniora and House Speaker Nabih Berri. Solana, who began a tour of the Middle East on Monday, has said "the violence must stop in all theatres". He also said: "We need a political dialogue to solve the crisis. We want to help calm the situation and see if it is possible to move in establishing a political perspective. This is the only solution."
