Gunmen opened fire on a Fatah police jeep in Gaza City Wednesday, killing the driver and five detained Hamas members as it was on its way to the Preventive Security headquarters, REPORTED DPA. Four more people were killed in ongoing clashes between Hamas and Fatah militants elsewhere in Gaza City, bringing Wednesday's death toll to at least 17, and the total since the fighting started four days ago to at least 44. The driver of the jeep was a member in the Fatah-dominated Preventive Security Force and the attackers may not have known that arrested Hamas militants were inside. Three members of the National Security Force, also dominated by Fatah, were killed in exchanges of fire in the so-called "hot zone," which includes the Preventive Security headquarters, the house of its chief Rashid Abu Shbak that was attacked overnight, as well as the Gaza residence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. A Hamas militant was also killed by a sniper in a shoot-out in central Gaza City, hospital officials said.
