Consumer prices in Cyprus rose by 1.8 percent on the year in April, as higher food prices lifted inflation from a 1.5 percent rate in March, the statistics service said Thursday. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, which account for a large portion of the consumer price basket, rose 6.6 percent, while the inflation rate for alcohol and tobacco more than doubled at 2.8 percent, ACCORDING TO AP. The biggest single increase was in healthcare costs, which chalked up a 6.9 percent rise. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices rose 1.1 percent in April, mainly due to increases in the prices of petroleum products and certain clothing items. Prices of some fresh vegetables and medical care also rose, the service said.
