At least eight people were killed and about 30 more injured by mudslides in the region around the central Colombian city of Ibague, civil defence officials said Sunday. Colombian authorities declared a high alert Sunday after mudslides set off by ongoing heavy rain destroyed or damaged the homes of at least 2,000 people, according to dpa. At least 15 separate mudslides occurred around the mountainous city. Rescue workers remained concerned that more slides could occur on hillsides. Meanwhile, the Conbeima River continued flooding in Ibague, and many people have refused to leave inundated homes that are in danger of collapse. -- SPA
