Local farmers and supporters of the communist-controlled state government clashed in India's West Bengal state on Sunday, firing guns and exploding homemade bombs that killed two people and injured two others, a communist leader said. The clash erupted when communist supporters tried to enter Nandigram village and were blocked by members of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh, or Land Acquisition Resistance Committee, said Nirmal Jana, a local Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader. «Two of our supporters were killed,» Jana told The Associated Press. The committee opposes now-abandoned plans by the communist state government to build an industrial park on their land to attract overseas investors with generous tax breaks. Raj Kanojia, an inspector-general of police, confirmed one death, but said police were still determining the total number of casualties. -- SPA
