Professor Serji Firari, a member of the World Health Organization's Osteoporosis Society, who works at Geneva university hospital, has warned against the rising rate among ladies who suffer from osteoporosis disease in the Arab Gulf Countries. Speaking at a lecture in Jeddah yesterday, Professor Firari said the rate of women who are liable for this disease is greater than the rate of men. More than 50 percent of women are at risk for this disease after menopause, while only 20 percent of men are at risk for the disease, he elaborated. The professor noted that curvature of the back is one of the symptoms of the disease. "Those who are suffering from osteoporosis are not in need of taking medicine, but they are in need of taking a lot of calcium and vitamin D," he added. Professor Firari pointed out that the person is in need of taking 800 units of vitamin D per day, this figure is equivalent to 36 eggs, but this quantity can be compensated by exposing the body to the sun for 15 minutes per day. He underscored the importance of taking vitamin D and exposing the arm and the face to the sun for 15 minutes every day. The professor attributed osteoporosis to a number of factors including smoking and deliverance of a lot of children by ladies.
