Heavy rain stranded cars on a flooded parkway north of New York City on Friday morning, less than two weeks after a massive nor'easter deluged some areas that were still cleaning up. Downpours and scattered thunderstorms were expected to drop a total of more than two inches (5 centimeters) through much of the metropolitan area, with more than three inches possible in some places, the National Weather Service said, according to AP. One car was immersed in water up to its bumpers on the Bronx River Parkway. At least three cars got stuck in high water along the parkway, but the drivers and passengers got out safely, said Westchester Police Lt. Donald MacArthur. The conditions were expected to continue for some time, as there was «a considerable depth of water» on the part of the highway near the city line, MacArthur said. Police reported no major flooding in New York City. The nor'easter that swept through the area April 15 caused major flooding in parts of Westchester and New Jersey, among other places. In Westchester, the storm left basements flooded and businesses with flooding almost five feet (1 1/2 meters) high. More than three dozen people were still staying at a Red Cross shelter at Mamaroneck High School as of Thursday, and more than 350 people were getting meals there. -- SPA
