French-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus announced Friday that it will lay off around 8,000 employees as part of its Power8 restructuring plan. In the company's headquarters in Toulouse, around 2,300 people on the assembly line and a further 946 corporate employees are to be let go, according to dpa. Other Airbus manufacturing locations to be affected are in the German city of Hamburg (2,317), the western English town of Filton (1,095) and other locations in France. The Power8 plan was approved by the board of directors of Airbus parent company EADS partly in reaction to increased competition and financial burdens related to the company's delays in delivering the A380 aircraft, which have cost the company billions of dollars. -- SPA
